Some may find its dark tone and slender narrative off-putting, but Spike Jonze's heartfelt adaptation of the classic children's book is as beautiful as it is uncompromising.

The question going into IWhere The Wild Things AreI is, can childlike wonderment be sustained for an entire film? Can Spike Jonze, who has never made a bad movie, take Maurice Sendaks rough-edged, slim picture book and give it the scope of a story for adults? The answer, as sad as I am to say this, is no.
