After a Thursday when all three favourites won easy
After a Thursday when all three favourites won easy, I hope you weren't lulled into a false sense of security that the trend would leak into Sunday. It didn't. 10 out of the 12 games yesterday saw the visiting team win outright. The Dogs covered 9 of 12 games yesterday. That is truly a dog day afternoon. When that happens I usually have a pretty good day and that happened as well. I turned what looked like a crapfest full of picks into a 4-1 Sunday.
Not sure whether my picks just got caught up in an election type wave of dog winners or a plan finally played out like it was supposed to, either way, things seem to fall exactly as they should have yesterday in the gambling world. Two games stick out for me. The Jets/Broncos game a the Raiders/Chiefs games. You know how when a baseball player is hitting the ball well he says everything seems to be moving in slow motion? That's how those two games looked to me yesterday. What great setups for the dog. Jets and Raiders coming off big unexpected wins in against teams or in places they should not have won. The Broncos/Chiefs getting blown out in games the week before. The Broncos inexcusably at home to the Raiders, the Chiefs giving up 55 in Buffalo. The public's memories are short, the lines inflated due to that reason. You just had to feel that Denver and Kansas City would come up with a better effort. You just had to know that Oakland and the Bretts would come back down to earth. It played out exactly that way. I just love when a plan comes together.
What would a Monday morning be without my weekly tribute to Norv Turner. Thanks Norv once again for ensuring that my income will once again be subsidized by your incompetent coaching. You are like receiving a guaranteed pay checque every week. I will be very sad to see you go when you inevitably get fired. I am actually considering starting a Keep Norv movement going around San Diego. Losing him would be like getting laid off a job.
I certainly hope that the Williams boys win their suspension appeals in Minnesota. That team is beginning to resemble the team I thought they were when I played them at 20-1 to win the NFC. They have an amazing run defence. Adrian Peterson is getting stronger as the weeks wear on and Gus Ferrotte is managing the team like a veteran can. They are starting to look like the second best team in the NFC. Get them to the NFC championship game and I will take my chances against the Giants. I will have to. Unfortunately there will not be any hedge opportunity there I don't believe.
Once again, yesterday unforntunately was marred by some horrific referreeing. Some of the replay review decisions in the Atlanta/San Diego game were just mystifying. The non roughing the passer call in Minnesota goes beyond any sense of understanding. Something has to be done about the quality of officiating in the NFL. The fans deserve better.
If there is one team in the league that I didn't believe in at the start of the season but now have a ton of respect for, it's the Pittsburgh Steelers. They have had an absolutely brutal schedule yet they sit at 9-3. They come to play every week and play a tough, smash mouth football everytime they suit up. They are a working man's team. They went in and beat up what is now a very soft New England squad. The Patriot's just don't have the toughness they did the last few years. They get beaten up by physical teams and the Steelers are a very physical team.
So, dogs were 9 of 12 yesterday. Add in Thursday and they were 10 of 15. Overs were 5-6-1 yesterday, 7-7-1 for the week. I put a little distance between me and the boys on our handicapping portion of our show. Here is the rundown.
I was 4-1. My crapfest of winners included Denver, Rams and Kansas City. I also won my requisite go against Norv play with Atlanta. My only loser, the loosey goosey dog which turned out to be just a turkey in Cincinnati.
The rest of the boys didn't fare as well. The Handle was 2-3. Winning Denver and Baltimore. Losing San Diego, Green Bay and the Oakland over.
Jorey was 0-3. Losing Green Bay and two teasers, Bills/Balt and SD/Wash.
Dave Malinsky split, winning Baltimore and losing Washington.
Tonights game has the Texans a 3 point choice over Jacksonville. The total is 48. I don't really have an opinion on the side but since these two teams are both out of the race and it's Houston's first Monday night home game in my memory, there could be some points put up. I think I will be on the over.
