And then reality set in......
And then reality set in......
After a couple of really good weeks, I posted a losing week again. It wasn't horrible but a loser nonetheless. Win or lose I always show up here Monday morning, whether I am feeling the football love or not so here are some random thoughts from a Sunday of NFL.
I said the same thing after Denver went for 2 points and the win against San Diego in Week 2. I am really on the fence about it. Don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other. In Denver's case, I do believe with the botched fumble call Mike Shanahan felt he was playing with the house money and really neither defense had stopped anybody all day. In Herm Edwards case yesterday, going for 2 and the win (ironically also against San Diego) I think it was the wrong call but my feelings are not that strong about it. I know the argument, we have one win, we have nothing to lose is relatively valid but I have to add something else to the equation. You are playing the Norv Turner coached San Diego Chargers. I think I would rather go into overtime and give the Chargers multiple plays to make a mistake than just give myself one chance at it with a 2 point conversion. I think you want to give your team a chance to take it to overtime and make a series of plays rather than just one.
Just before we leave that game. I would be remiss if I didn't give you your Monday morning dose of Turner hating. The Chargers, picked as a favourite to win it all in the AFC are 4-5 and were just life and death to beat a 1 win team at home as a 15 point favourite. Am I obsessed with this? Am I the only one that sees the incompetance here? Hello? Is there anybody out there listening? I may need an intervention to stop the voices in my head.......
We are all about value on our show. From a value standpoint, if you bet $100 on the Rams you got about 10 cents worth of value. Because about 5 mins into the game your bet was toast and you had no chance. Yes, I am aware that one of my picks was the Rams. Missed it by that much..... After looking like they were going to turn it around after beating Dallas and Washington on the road, the Rams have quit again. They have the attention span of a 2 year old with ADD. How do you give up 40 first half points to the Bretts? There should be a rule where you are suspended as a team from the league for your next 2 games after a performance like that.
Ok, so I should not have won the Rams game. I think that is a given. But the Bears game, I think I could have had that one. Things went almost exactly as handicapped. Bears 6th ranked rush defence would stop the Titans rushing game and force Kerry Collins to the air. They did that. Titans rushed for 19 yards! The game was placed in Kerry Collins hands.....and he delivered....foiled again! The Titans just find ways to keep winning. They have to be the quietest 9-0 in history. Never mind moving into the neighbourhood. I don't even think Mercury Morris knows these guys have entered the city.
My nomination for Coach of the Decade. Mike Smith. The job he has done is Atlanta is truly remarkable. This is a team that was in absolute shambles only last year. Their quarterback in jail, their coach leaving mid season. They blow out all their veterans and start from scratch. Now they are a contender in the playoff hunt and winning games they are supposed to win. You can't go against them saying things like a rookie QB on the road, or not accustomed to being a favourite at home. They just keep getting the job done. Matt Ryan is unflappable. This is a great story and how quickly we all forget about Michael Vick. The true Cinderella story of this season.
I guess you really couldn't expect much from Daunte Culpepper with 3 days practice coming out of retirment. I don't expect much next week either with 1 week and 3 days practice coming out of retirement. Even typing a Lions paragraph after a Falcons paragraph is like winning a horse race with a 40-1 shot then finding out he has been disqualified...from the highest to the lowest in the matter of seconds.
There were two 9.5 point favourites out there yesterday. I said neither deserved to be 9 point favourites over anybody. I made one of them one of my top picks, the other I left off my card....they were the Jets and the Dolphins....you know which one proved me right..the one I didn't bet.
Is it just me, or is Indy quietly getting their swagger back. They have turned from powerhouse to comeback kids. They aren't blowing anybody out, but are showing amazing resilience each week coming back and winning. Yesterday to comeback in Pittsburgh against a very good defence was impressive. They are pretty much done in the division, but I wouldn't want to be meeting up with them as a wild card entry come playoff time. This team is gaining back it's confidence more and more each week.
If you were on Carlina laying 9 or 10 points you must have been gagging on your dinner when Oakland lined up for a 57 yard field goal with 11 seconds left down 11. I couldn't even get mad. It was the right move by Tom Cable. They needed two scores. Of course they were never going to get them as that offence can't move forward without tripping over themselves, but it was the right move. Anyway, 57 yarder. It's up. Straight down the middle. I turned away and clunk..off the crossbar. Football, what an amazing game to wager on. You can swallow your dinner now.
Favourites beat the dogs 7-5 yesterday. 8-5 when you throw in Thursday. Overs were also 8-5 including Thursdays matchup.
Here is your Sunday show recap.
I was 2-3. Winners were Green Bay and the Bills Under. Losers were Chicago, New Orleans, and Rams.
Randall was 0-5 (Ouch). Rams, Phil, Bills, Pitt and Balt did him in. He is also on SF tonight.
Jorey also sucked. Losing Balt, Pitt, NO/Minn teaser and Car/Buff teaser. He did cash his Bears/Jags teaser.
Dave Malinsky had Pitt for a loss, the Giants under for a loss and the NO/Mia teaser for a loss.
Not a banner day all around. Nothing to do but get back on that horse and try again. But not tonight for me. Arizona is 9.5 point favourites over SF. The total is 47. I don`t like the game. Arizona should smash them, but it is alot of points. I will be taking a pass and licking my wounds.
