Can we all just enjoy the 2-0 Als start and not question it already?

Yes, I know we are only two weeks into the CFL regular season. Yes, I know one of the wins came against Hamilton, a team widely regarded as inferior to the North Shore Broncos. But, they are 2-0 in an eight-team league and their QB does appear to be playing as good as he possibly can. So why are there so many skeptics?

It feels like nobody is sold on this team contending for the Grey Cup. Everyone wants to point to the under .500 record of last season and say that this team is basically the same personnel. Ya, true, but do you remember how they lost their starting quarterback for the last part of the season? Do you remember how they nearly upset Winnipeg in the postseason? Finally, have you seen them look bad for any prolonged stretch of either of their 2008 games? Enough already.

Let's just enjoy the positive record and wonder about the possibilities. I am tired of reading the daily negative shots at Montreal. There's always something negative to drown out a positive when it comes to the Als in the paper. Even when they were the class of the league, media peeps were screaming for the firing of Don Matthews because he wasn't media-friendly.

And here's something else to consider - the rest of the league stinks so far this season! Not one team has impressed me or has scared me into thinking they are light years ahead of the Als. Perhaps CFL football is just football when you break it down to x's and o's and game film. Maybe Coach Trestman doesn't have to be a seasoned CFL coach to get the job done. Maybe he just has to be a good, solid pigskin coach, period! For every unfounded putdown of Trestman, we do have to remember that he took a team to the Super Bowl as offensive coordinator. How many other CFL coaches, past and present, can say that? (Yes, I am well aware of Marv Levy's heroics)

So how about we all just sit back, relax and smile about our Als. This was supposed to be the beginning of the end for them. The losing ways and the rebuilding was supposed to be here and we were all supposed to wonder if Montreal would have supported a losing team for the unforseeable future. Well, it doesn't seem like we have to worry about that right now. Instead, we're left wondering if all of those Grey Cup tickets in November will be used to cheer on the home team, or go unused because the Als have already started their offseason vacationing.

(Tune in to Game Points this Sunday 8pm-midnight to hear more on the Als and from my special sports guests)
