Glad to see most of you are still with us today.
Glad to see most of you are still with us today. About 2:30 Sunday afternoon I thought it would be literally a suicide day meaning all of you in suicide pools would be jumping off bridges. With Chicago, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville all far behind, that should have wiped out just about everybody left in a last man standing pool. Fortunately for you, Chicago and Tampa stormed back to win. Even more fortunate for you, they were playing Detroit and Kansas City respectively, did you ever have a doubt? Jacksonville was not as lucky. They were at least playing a team with a modicum of talent in Cincinnati. So, the Lions remain the only winless team. That won't last long. Daunte Culpepper to the rescue. Problem solved....(tongue planted firmly in cheek).
Back to back 3-0 weeks on my Friday radio spots and 4-1 on the Sunday show. Starting to turn things around. Well, it has not been a change in my handicapping ability. I just decided to stop handicapping and just go with what the oddsmakers are telling me with their numbers. If everybody you talk to tells you they like one team, yet that number hasn't moved all week, take the other side. It's a pretty easy concept and one that has me in the black for the last couple of weeks.
Back to the Lions for a second. Not only did they give up a 10 point lead to the Bears. They let Rex Grossman lead the Bears to the comeback win. The Lions are no longer just happy losing games outright. They now have to find new and improved ways to embarrass themselves. Just losing a game 32-3 isn't good enough for them anymore. They are bored by it. They need to keep themselves interested in losing, hence, Rex Grossman leads fourth quarter comeback. It truly is mind boggling how bad this franchise is.
Speaking of bad franchises.....Ladies and Gentleman....your 2008 Oakland Raiders. 3-10-77. No, that is not the release date of Saturday Night Fever. That is the number of first downs (3), passing yards (10) and total yards (77) generated by the Oakland Raiders vs the Atlanta Falcons at home. That would be horrific numbers if let's say they were playing the 2000 Baltimore Ravens or the 1985 Chicago Bears. But they were not. They were playing the Falcons who just one year ago had a worse record than the Raiders. Mr. Davis, it is time to go quitely into that good night.
It's time to start the Brady Quinn era in Cleveland. Derek Anderson was a good story last year, but obviously that story had a one year shelf life. It's over. The offence looks nothing like it did last year and that pick 6 he threw at the end of the game when the Browns were still in it was horrible. Nothing to lose for the Browns now. Time to see if the Mighty Quinn has anything to offer.
There are some bad teams in bad divisions that still are not out of playoff contention. The quality of football might stink, but it should make for a very interesting last two months. In the AFC West I may petition that they just do not award a playoff participant. The Broncos are horrid yet they are out front in that division. All they have to do is show up every Sunday and they will stay ahead of KC and Oakland. I am afraid the Chargers may end up winning that division by default as Norv Turner aside, I still think they have the most talent in that division. The NFC is wide open with no real outstanding teams. I still think the Vikings can win that division, unless of course Pat and Kevin Williams get suspended for 4 games each for substance abuse. If that happens, so goodnight to the Vikings. Then there is the NFC West. The Arizona Cardinals are going to walk away with that division as a .500 team by the time the season ends. That .500 record should give them the division by about 4 games.
Has there ever been any less fanfare for a 8-0 team then the Tennessee Titans. Nobody is talking about them being an undefeated club for the season. That is because they won't be. Somebody will beat them. They just have to. I can't live the rest of my life knowing Kerry Collins quarterbacked an undefeated football team.
Has a team ever fallen from grace faster than the Dallas Cowboys? First of all, Wade Phillips is a terrible head coach. I have been saying that for years. He is another one of those good coordinator bad head coach guys ala Turner, Marv Lewis, Jim Hasslet et al. But, most importantly, no team will ever win with Terrell Owens on their roster. I have also been saying that for years. This team took a turn for the worse before Romo's injury. It started when T.O started yapping about not getting the ball. He is a big mouth, a complainer, a selfish football player and a cancer on any football team.
A good friend of mine once said a line which remains as one of my favourites. He said, "I dropped out of school in grade 7 and I always regretted it........ I wish I had dropped out in grade 6". Think years from now Mike Holmgren's line will be "I retired from coaching in 2008 and always regretted it....I wish I would have retired in 2007".
Dogs got the better of the favourites yesterday 8-5. Unders beat overs 6-5 with two pushes on the totals. Here are our show results:
I had a good day going 4-1. Winners were Green Bay, Miami, Detroit and the Jets. My loser was Cleveland.
Randall went 3-1. Winning Green Bay, Atlanta and the Houston over. He also lost Cleveland.
Jorey went 3-3. Winning Miami, Atlanta and Philly. Losing Houston, Tampa Bay and Cleveland. Once again, if the 3 of us are on the same game...run away...run away fast.
Dave Malinsky won with the Jets but lost Tennessee and his college play East Carolina. Rob Longley had a loser with Dallas.
The Monday night matchup has Pittsburgh in Washington. If you can stomach more presidential grandstanding, the line has Washington -1 with a total of 36.5. Nobody had a strong opinion on the game. I lean a bit to Washington. I just think the Steelers schedule is going to catch up on them. They can't keep playing tough physical matchups every week with that horrid offensive line.
By the way, is it just me or am I seeing the Steelers every single week in prime time? Just wondering....
