The Green Bay Packers made a big mistake in letting Brett Favre move on to the New York Jets.
Most will tell you that it's way too early to evaluate the decision by the Green Bay Packers to move Brett Favre. These same pundits will also tell you that the Packers likely would have only gotten one year out of Favre had he remained in Green Bay. I on the other hand, believe Green Bay made a horrible, horrible mistake.
General Manager Ted Thompson says that Aaron Rodgers is the present and the future of the Green Bay Packers, the guy to lead them into the next phase of the franchise. The only problem? The Pack were within one touchdown of reaching the Super Bowl last season, not an easy feat. In an age of parity, where the margin between the contenders and pretenders is so narrow, changing your starting quarterback is about the biggest disruption to team continuity that you can make.
And why aren't more people talking about this factor. Yes, Favre jerked around the Packers. Yes, they were tired of going through the same situation over the last three or four offseasons. But couldn't they have swallowed their pride a little and brought him back one more time to see if they could reach the Super Bowl? Instead, they are going with Aaron Rodgers, a guy who has missed more games as a back-up QB than Favre has missedĀ as a starter in 17 seasons. Isn't anyone alarmed about this aspect?
There is no tomorrow in the NFL - if you have a chance to win a football championship, you do everything humanly possible to make it happen. And if it includes bringing back a guy who pissed your franchise off, you do it! We're not talking about an individual of Manny Ramirez-like distraction, we are talking about a legend in his own time and someone that has made your team a whole lot of money.
As for Favre? Well, he is going to a franchise that is only a season removed from being a playoff contender. Add in some great free agent pick-ups and a good draft and the New York Jets are primed for a winning season with Favre under centre.
My prediction? Favre and the Jets go 11-5 and challenge the Pats for a division title. Green Bay will be 8-8 and see Rodgers miss three gamesĀ to injury.
It's a sad ending to a storybook relationship between a player and his team.
